Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall of 13 feet: a)5/8/01, An employee was observed without fall protection standing on top of the railing around the platform above the block machine with a hand scraper attempting to loosen the concrete in the hopper. This same employee was observed a second time without fall protection standing on the same railing to check inside the hopper to determine if it was completely emptied. The base of this platform is located approximately 13 feet above the concrete floor. Some feasible and acceptable methods of abatement to eliminate this fall hazard include but are not limited to, using a scissor lift or other type of manlift or attaching a cage platform to the hopper with access from the existing platform or using body harnesses and lifelines. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM.
