Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employee(s) were exposed to the hazards of being struck by vehicles operated in reverse. On or about 12/24/2001, two employees were attempting to remedy a mechanical problem in a delivery truck by backing up another delivery truck into it. One employee exited the truck he was operating and was struck by the other truck operated in reverse with an obstructed rear view. Among other feasible and useful abatement methods to correct this hazard, one method would be to a) Install an automatic alarm to sound above the surrounding noise whenever the truck with an obstructed rear view is operated in reverse. b) Institute a fleet maintenance and inspection program to identify defects in the delivery vehicles and repair them in methods prescribed by the manufacturers.o/JyyJp\
