Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of: Being struck by ferromagnetic objects which become entrained in the MRI's magnetic field: a)Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY - Macy Pavilion, MRI Suite, MRI Scan Room: On or about July 27, 2001: MRI Technicians working in the MRI Scan Room were exposed to the hazard of being struck by ferromagnetic objects which inadvertently could become entrained in the MRI's magnetic field: Among other methods, feasible and acceptable means of abatement are: 1.To the extent feasible, ensure all ferromagnetic objects are removed from the MRI Suite. 2.Ensure that existing Department of Radiology procedures are followed to exclude all ferromagnetic materials from the MRI's magnetic field. NOTE: In addition to abatement certification, the employer is required to submit abatement documentation for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.
