Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being hit by flying metal parts: Location: Intersection of Ashburton Ave. and Ashburton Place, Yonkers, NY On or about: 5/7/01 a) Employees were using a Case 590 L series backhoe to lift a steel plate, that was resting on blocks, onto a tag-along trailer. The employer did not ensure that the proper lifting connection was used. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1. Retrain employees in the safe operating procedures to follow while lifting loads using the Case 590 L series backhoe as stipulated in the manufacturer's manual, including but not limited attaching the sling to the lifting crossbar; and 2. Enforce the procedures described in the manufacturer's manual for safe lifting using the Case 590 L series backhoe.
