Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of Public Law 91-596, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to: Being struck by and /or crushed by materials dropped from defective below the hook lifting devices: (a) Coating department - 5 home made spreader bars used with Loestar 2 ton hoists did not have rated load of the spreader bars marked on the main structure. Also, hazard disclosed during an inspection was not corrected before the spreader bar is put back in service, in that, spreader bar(s) had chains welded to a beam of steel. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to: Comply with the requirements of American National Standard Institute, ANSI/ASME B30.20, for Below the Hook Lifting Devices.
