Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: GUARDING
Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)On or about 08/20/01, employees were exposed to the hazard of being run over as the Kleeco straddle-lift (model #SP1600H, serial #1621583) was being operated in the vicinity of employees without proper personnel-deflecting guards around the leading edges of front and rear wheels. The front wheels were missing deflecting guards altogether and the rear wheel guards were of an improper design as they were too high off the ground. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method is to install personnel-deflecting guards around the leading edges of front and rear wheels. Deflecting guards should extend and be designed in such a manner to push persons out of the way of an oncoming vehicle and not capable of running them over. PLEASE NOTE: CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
