Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment or a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of drowning while improperly using a plumber's test plug to repair a leaking drain pipe. At the job site at Claire Manufacturing Company, 1005 Westgate Drive, Addison, IL an employee using a plumber's test plug to repair a leaking drain pipe did not insure that the test plug was in proper operating condition as specified in the manufacturer's safety instructions for the proper use of the test plug. The metal ring which prevents the plug from being pulled into the pipe had been removed and replaced with a length of rope which the employee tied around his wrist causing his arm to be pulled into the pipe when the plug was deflated. A feasible method of abatement would be to insure that the metal ring is not removed or damaged and if the plug is not in proper working condition remove it from service.
