Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard from falling a distance of 14 ft to the ground when working on a free standing unstable structure. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to limit the height at which work is being done on the free standing structures to a distance no greater than four times the minimum base dimension of the structure to avoid having the structure tip over. A) LOCATION: FINISHING AREA WORKERS INVOLVED IN THE ERECTION OF A MEZZANINE, WERE ON A FREE STANDING SECTION OF A RACK SYSTEM AT A LEVEL OF 170" AND THE MINIMUM BASE DIMENSION WAS ONLY 42" WIDE, CREATING A HEIGHT TO WIDTH RATION GREATER THAN FOUR TO ONE (4:1) AND AN UNSTABLE STRUCTURE. THE STRUCTURE TIPPED OVER WHILE WORK WAS BEING DONE ON IT.
