Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) On October 25, 2000 Ganna Construction, Inc. permitted employees to ride on the exterior of a wheel loader without a seat or seat belt, thus exposing riders to fall and caught-in hazards and subsequent crushing injuries. The Equipment Manufactures Institute publishes a Backhoe/Loader Safety Manual that clearly prohibits riders on machines of this type. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include the use of onsite vehicles designed to transport personnel. No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item.
