Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by moving steel beams. Bay 3, north end, overhead 20-ton crane #001, employer failed to ensure that employees clearly understood the procedures and hazards associated with the operation of cranes. Hazard of being struck by equipment. A feasible and acceptable method of abatement is to ensure that instructions and workrules are clearly communicated to employees by requiring a practical exam in accordance with ASME B30.11-1998, Sections 11-3.1.3 and 11-3.1.4. On August 6, 2001, an employee working in and around an overhead crane was struck and killed when the crane bridge was moved by an untrained employee.
