Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to the hazard of steam burns due to improper operation of overpressure protection safety devices: At Boilers #1 - #10, safety devices designed and intended only for overpressure protection were routinely actuated to control the pressure of a steam system during normal operations. Employees were exposed to the potential of severe burns when working throughout the Boilerhouse/Powerhouse #1. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazardous condition would be to facilitate safety devices for overpressure protection per intended use as described in the National Board Inspection Code of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (ANSI/NB) 23 - 2001 Edition. **Abatement documentation required for this item**
