Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPOPPROC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) The hazard of asphyxiation in that compressed nitrogen was carried in a piping system which had not been clearly identified for its content in accordance with the American National Standards Institute, ANSI A13.1-1996. On or before July 7, 2003, one outside contractor was exposed to the asphyxiation hazard. Feasible means of abatement would be but not limited to marking all piping systems with the appropriate legend meeting the color and size requirements of ANSI A13.1-1996, Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems. Positive identification of a piping system shall be by lettered legend giving the name of the contents in full or abbreviated form. Legends shall be applied close to valves, flanges, and adjacent to changes in direction, branches, and where pipes pass through walls and floors, and at intervals on a straight pipe sufficient for identification.
