Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls from the elevated forks of a powered industrial truck: (a) Location - Storage Room: On or about 6/25/01, employees were exposed to the hazard of falling while being elevated on an unsecured wooden pallet placed on the forks of a caterpillar 35 powered industrial truck to access the solar cover storage area in the racks. Among other means, feasible means of abatement includes, but are not limited to, the following:: Use of a lift platform complying with all of the requirements of ANSI/ASME B56.1- 1993, Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks, Sections 4.17, Elevating Personnel and 7.35 Platforms - Elevating. Which include, but are not limited to: (a) Use of a restraining means such as a guardrail or means for securing personnel such as a body belt and lanyard and where guardrails with entry gates or chains are provided, ensure that they are capable of withstanding a concentrated horizontal force of 200 lbs.; and (b) Use of a means to securely attach the platform to the lifting carriage or forks to prevent the lifting carriage or forks from pivoting upward; and (c) Provide the weight of the platform, load capacity and the capacity of the truck needed to lift the platform with a determined load in a prominent location on the platform.
