Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a struck by hazard: On or about July,11, 2002, at the Burkhart Well site #1R, employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a pressurized flow line: Failure to keep employees from working in and around a pressurized flowline, stepping across and/or lifting the flow line. Employees were using a Caterpillar front-end loader to pick up wooden mats(pads) under and near a pressurized flow line that was used to flow test the oil/gas well to sales. One feasible and acceptable abatement is to not have employees working near the pressurized flow line. American Petroleum Institute Standard (API) 54-99, Recommended Practices for Occupational Safety of Oil Well Drilling and Servicing, Section 12.1.6. Also another feasible abatement would be to remove the wooden mats (pads) after the flow testing operation was over.
