Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards and/or the hazard of dropped loads: (a)United Parcel Service at 5020 Ivy Street, Commerce City, Colorado 80022: On or before 11/5/01, the employer did not ensure that its drop frame trailers' self-contained roller systems operated as intended, causing injuries to employees working to release package jams. Approximately 40of these gravity-fed roller systems did not work properly. When these roller systems jammed, employees were struck by packages of various sizes and weights as they were dislodging the jams. According to the first reports of injury, employees suffered contusions, abrasions, inflammation, and possible fractures and concussions.
