Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of crushing injuries: On or about May 7, 2002, employees, working in the Glass Droppers Area of the Spandrel Department, were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by a load while using the hoist for transporting sheets of glass and the employer failed to establish and follow a program of frequent and periodic inspections of the hoist system. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: a)establish and follow a program of frequent and periodic inspections of the hoist system in accordance with ASME B30.16-1998, American Society of Mechanical Engineers for Overhead Hoists (Underhung), Section 16-2.1.5.
