Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Minn. Stat. 182.653 subd. 2: The employer did not furnish to each employee, conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards which caused or were likely to cause death or serious injury to employees: One employee in the body shop was exposed to 0.26 mg/m3 of 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate as an 8-hour TWA, which is in excess of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommended limit of 0.035 mg/m3. A ten minute ceiling limit of 0.14 mg/m3 is also recommended by NIOSH. Overexposure to isocyanates can lead to asthma and other lung problems, including sensitization, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. Ventilation or other engineering controls were not adequate to reduce exposure. A supplied air respirator, used in accordance with an effective respiratory protection program, must be used until exposure levels are reduced.
