Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. On or about January 29, 2001 in the BOP shop employees were exposed to crushing, burns or death from handling large ladles of molten by crane with wire ropes that had been exposed to extreme heat by being splashed and covered from an eruption of molten metal. One feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to implement an inspection program such as that referenced by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B30.5, 1989, Mobile and Locomotive cranes, Section 5-2.4.3. Such an inspection program shall provide for immediate inspection and removal or replacement of wire ropes exposed to heat damage. Additional abatement information is required for this item.
