Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(A)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees working in the service department were exposed to hazards of being struck and / or crushed by vehicles being service on hydraulic lifts bypassing the safety latch. Service Department: Challenger Lifts Model 24018 Serial # 3069, 24018LR Serial # 3290, Model 24030 Serial # 3290, Model 24018, Serial # 3067. A) On or about 10/17/00 the safety latch on the hydraulic lifts was bypassed. B) Weekly inspections of the lifts were inadequate in that, there were no manufactuer's operating manuals to specify how to and what should be inspected on the lifts. Among other methods, of correction would be to follow and maintain the system in accordance with ANSI / ALIB153.1 also known as the ALOIM- 1994 standard.4 1. Obtain the automobile lifts operation's manual, and post within the service department area. 2. Develop and implement a maintenance schedule to ensure that proper operating parameters are met. These include, but are not limited to, manufacturing recommendations. 3. Provide employee training on the lifts which should include the above information, as well as strict enforcement of the procedures. PLEASE NOTE: CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
