Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of operating equipment near electrical pole "guy" wires where the equipment may become entangled, exposing employees to being struck-by, crushed, caught-in/between or contacting live electrical conductors. a) On or about 1/19/2000 an operator of a "Goat" harvester attempted to pass between (under) a "guy" wire and an electrical pole without clearing the obstruction or using a signalman (spotter) to ensure the equipment did not contact or become entangled in the "guy" wire. A feasible and acceptable means of abatement would be to ensure that equipment operators avoid overhead obstructions caused by "guy" wires and other electrical equipment by re-routing their path of travel or utilize a spotter to ensure clearance from the obstruction.
