Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: a)On or before May 4, 2000 at the conveyor, employees who pick carton boxes from a moving conveyor belt were exposed to being caught by the moving conveyor belt. The conveyor was not provided with an emergency stopping device to prevent employees from being pulled into in-going nip points between the belt and the belt idlers or machine frame members. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among others, a feasible method to eliminate or to materially reduce this hazard is to comply with ASME/ANSI B20.1-1990, section 6.1.2 and provide permanently installed pull cords or similar stop controllers at points where employees are normally stationed.
