Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to serious injury while disassembling air lines without ensuring that the pressure had been turned off and the residual air bled off prior to beginning the work. Jobsite: Spaulding North Work Zone, West of North Station Track # 10: On or about May 11, 2000, employees were exposed to serious injury while disassembling a six (6) inch Victolic air supply pipe, supplying 120 P.S.I., where the workers thought that the supply had been turned off, however it had been turned on. One method of abatement among other methods would be to develop a procedure to ensure the installation of a valve to be used to bleed off the residual air, and ensure that all air pressure had been released prior to disassembling the piping system. The employees were not trained in a procedure to ensure that the air would be positively turned off prior to the beginning of the operation.
