Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LOCKOUT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to coming into contact with moving parts of the compactor and/or flying debris from the compactor: Location: Garbage Compactor On or about 12/5/00, a) The key was continuously left in the compactor control panel which would not prevent unauthorized operation. b) The emergency stop button was not located within 3 feet of the chute feeding area. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to follow ANSI Z245.2-1992 Stationary Compactors - Safety Requirements for Refuse Collection, Processing, and Disposal Equipment. NOTE: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the inspection case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement of this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
