Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5 (a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck or crushed by the machine parts during the operation of the backhoe. a) Job Site, 30 Exchange Place: Case 590 Turbo Loader Backhoe Machine. Serial Number JJGO206460. An employee was cutting the sidewalk concrete along the property line, was not protected from being struck by a backhoe outrigger plate, on or about 9/29/2000. Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: See Reference Operators Manual of a Case 590 Turbo Loader Backhoe machine. a) Clear the area of all other persons not essential to operate the backhoe equipment. b) Make sure all persons are away from the machine before you start the engine. c) Operator must be alert and always know the location of all of the other workers in your area.
