Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by falling limbs: a) Private residence, 22 E. Linden Ave. - Employees were exposed to being struck by falling tree limbs and/or sections while working below cutting activities. On or about 11/01/00. Among others, feasible and reasonable abatement methods to correct this hazard would be to develop and implement a policy that follows the requirements outlined in the American National Standard Institute's standard for Tree Care Operations - Pruning, Trimming, Maintaining and Removing Trees and Cutting Brush - Safety Requirements, Section 9 Work Procedures (ANSI Z133.1-1994). These requirements include, but are not limited to: 1) Warnings, when necessary, shall be given by the worker in the tree before a limb is dropped. "Timber" or "heads-up" are common terms used for this purpose. 2) Guidelines, handlines, or taglines shall be used when limbs cannot be dropped safely. 3) Each tree worker shall be instructed as to what to do. Employees shall not be allowed to work under limbs which are being cut. NOTE:ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM. See page 2,"Notification of Corrective Action" for instructions.
