Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall from an aerial lift basket without the benefit of wearing a body belt with lanyard attached to the boom or basket: a)Sears Building, east side - Employee was observed working from a SKYLIFT model S40 aerial lift raised approximately 25 feet in the air without use of a body belt or lanyard. On or about 08/20/99. Abatement Notes: Among other methods,one feasible method to reduce the hazard is to: 1. Follow ANSI/SIA A92.5-1992-Boom Supported Elevating Work Platforms,section 8.8 states:" Ensure all personnel in the platform are wearing fall protection devices and other safety gear as required at all times"and 2. Train the employees in the proper procedures while operating aerial lifts, such as, but not limited to, the wearing of a safety belt with lanyard. ABATEMENT VERIFICATION IS NOT REQUIRED AS OUTLINED IN PART 29 CFR 1903.19
