Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist, supporting structure or the below the hook lifting device fail: a)Chemical treatment area, on or about 07/13/00: Overhead hoist used for lifting materials above the acid bath. 1.Load chain link was damaged at the lifting hook. 2.Safety clip was not installed on lifting hook. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method of abatement is to: 1.Replace damaged load chain as per ASME B30.16-1987. 2.Replace safety clip as per ASME B30.16-1987. b)Chemical treatment area, on or about 07/13/00: Below the hook lifting device for lifting materials from acid bath had no rated load capacity markings and no initial, frequent or periodic inspections performed. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method of abatement is to: 1.Prior to use all new, modified, or repaired lifting devices shall be inspected by a designated person and an operational test performed to insure compliance. 2.Mark the rated load capacity of the lifting device on the main structure or equivalent. 3). Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the lifting devices for wear, deterioration, or malfunction in accordance with ASME B30.20.
