Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load, and/or coming in contact with ingoing nip points: a)C Section, North end, on or about 2/8/00: A Shawbox #F10 five ton overhead hoist had a broken safety latch on the hook, and the load block was not enclosed at the running ropes and sheaves, exposing employees to being struck by the load and/or coming in contact with ingoing nip points. Among other methods, several feasible and acceptable methods to correct these hazards are to: 1.Conduct periodic inspections of the overhead hoists and make appropriate repairs to deficiencies found on the inspection. 2.Repair or replace the safety latch on the hook. 3.Install an enclosure on the load block to prevent entry into the nip points. Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
