Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of working under and/or around elevated vehicles that were not supported in such a way as to provide sufficient stability to ensure that the vehicle would not fall. The supports did not meet the requirements of ASME PALD standards. a) On or about May 7, 1999, an employee of Sharp Parts Auto Recyclers, Inc., was fatality injures when the vehicle he was working under fell on him. The vehicle was improperly supported by using a two wheel rim with a two by four placed across each rim. One rim placed was under vehicle's frame at approximately the mid point of the driver's door and the other at approximately the mid point of the passenger door. There were no measures taken to prevent the car from rolling backwards. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to abate this hazard is to purchase and use commercially manufactured vehicle support stands that incorporate the requirements of ASME PALD. Abatement documentation for this item is required in accordance with the requirement of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
