Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that, on or about 05/11/01, an employee was working on a drop hammer which was inadequately guarded by a mechanical sweep which exposed employees to the potential hazards of being struck by the sweep during the downward stroke, being caught in the point of operation, and/or being struck by splintering stock: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to provide an interlocking movable barrier gate. OR IN THE ALTERNATIVE: 29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Machine guarding was not provided to protect operator(s) and other employees from hazard(s) created by mechanical sweep devices, point of operation and splintering die sock: a) Single Stroke Press Room: The drop hammers were not provided with an adequate guard exposing employees to the hazards of being struck by the mechanical sweep devices, the point of operation during the downward stroke and from being struck by splintering die stock.
