Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of burns from steam and product during a boil-over: (a)Upper Sauce Kitchen: On or about May 18, 2000 and at times prior thereto employees operating the Lee cook kettles or working nearby were not adequately trained in safety procedures and the hazards of steam and hot product during a boil- over. Note: Abatement certification required for this item. Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard: -Train employees how and where to activate emergency stop buttons. - Install an emergency stop button at a safe location across the room from the kettles. - Update the job safety analysis to address the hazard of boil-overs.
