Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling through an unsupported roof area: OR IN THE ALTERNATIVE 29 CFR 1926.501(a)(2): Employer failed to prevent access to surfaces which did not have the requisite strength and structural integrity to prevent collapse: (a)The Home Depot Construction Project, 1650 Pole Line Road, Twin Falls, ID - On 16 November 1999, employees cut the roof deck and left it unsupported, unattended and unbarricaded. An employee of another contractor stepped onto this area and fell approximately 29 feet to a concrete surface below. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO COVER THE UNSUPPORTED AREA WITH MATERIAL CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING WITHOUT FAILURE, AT LEAST TWICE THE WEIGHT OF EMPLOYEES, EQUIPMENT, AND MATERIALS; AND/OR BARRICADE THE AREA OFF TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL ACCESS TO THE UNSUPPORTED ROOF AREA."
