Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to unsafe lifting and moving trusses that were not adequately support to prevent failure: OR IN THE ALTERNATIVE 29 CFR 1926.251(a)(1): Rigging equipment for material handling was not inspected prior to use on each shift and as necessary during its use to ensure that it was safe: (a)On or about 24 May 1999, and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by trusses when they were rigged unsafely with a single connection to the apex area of the truss. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO FOLLOW THE GUIDANCE PROVIDED BY THE TRUSS PLATE INSTITUTE HANDBOOK (HIB-91), PARAGRAPH 4.3.7 ( FIGURE 12), OR TRUSS PLATE INSTITUTE POST FRAME SUMMARY SHEET (HIB-98) BY USING A SPREADER BAR TO SAFELY DISTRIBUTE THE LOAD."
