Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of Public Law 91-596, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a struck by hazard from vehicular traffic due to the lack of warning signs, barricades, and flagmen to warn and inform oncoming traffic of the work zone on or near the roadway: (a)Hwy 57 Jobsite - On or about July 16, 2000, two employees were struck by oncoming vehicular traffic while working to repair an electrical outage which resulted in their death. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install barricades, warning devices, and flagmen when traffic must be moved through and around utility work in accordance with requirements of ANSI D61.1971, The Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, Section 6.
