Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazard of falls at Delta Homes Inc: (a)Employees were exposed to the hazard of falling platform/catwalks supported by hoists. The approximately 90 foot long catwalks/platforms positioned alongside the homes had one brace in the middle and Coffing hoist supported each end of the platform. (Reference American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B30.16.1973, Chapter 16-2, Section 16-2.3.2.3(e) and Coffing Hoist Operating & Maintenance Instruction Pub. Part No. EC6890-5, Rule 31 "Do not use hoist to lift, support, or transport people".) (b) Employees without fall protection worked on roof areas installing decking and roofing material were exposed to falling approximately feet to the concrete floor. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to prohibit employees from working on hoisted loads, install underbracing to support the intended loads on the work platforms, and to use a fall arrest system for work performed on roof areas.med
