Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CAUGHT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees are exposed to potential caught in between hazards: a) Receiving - The Load King compactor was being operated with a malfunctioning interlock on the access door. The employer did not inspect the interlock to ensure that it was not bypassed or disabled. The employer permitted the compacted to be operated in this condition. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard is to repair the interlock on the access door in accordance with the American National Standard Institute's Stationary Compactors - Safety Requirements, Section 6, Operational requirements, specifically, Section 6.1 (n), "specifically inspecting safety interlocks, switches, and other protective devices to ensure that these devices are not disabled or bypassed, and not to permit the stationary compactor to be operated unless these devices are fully functional".
