Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being caught/crushed between the conveyer belt and material being transported. a) Plastic/Paper Conveyor System: Dover Conveyor #1 an emergency stop button was found to be inoperative, emergency pull cords or similar emergency stop devices were not installed/maintained at those points where personnel are normally stationed to prevent employees from being caught in or on the conveyor belts. Violation occurred on 3/10/99 b) Paper/Cardboard Sorting Conveyor, Stations #3 and #5: Emergency stop buttons had broken cover shields where employees are stationed when sorting paper and cardboard. Violation observed on or about 3/25/99 AMONG OTHER METHODS ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1. Ensure that emergency stop devices are in working order. 2. Provide emergency pull cords/trip wires along the entire length of the conveyor system. 3. Perform routine inspections and corrective maintenance measures to insure that all guards and safety features are retained and function properly. Reference ANSI/ASME B20.1-1984, Sections 5.9.1.3, 5.11.2.(c), 5.12(h), 6.1.2(c).
