Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the conditions listed below: a) Eunice Rice Mill, Eunice LA. - raised platform containing Rice Hullers, Ideal Separators, Rotex Separators, Whiteners, etc. On or about 2 Jun 99, the employer required employees to cross between elevated platforms, approximately 25 ft above the raised platform, by walking on a screw conveyor. This condition exposed employees to the hazards and injuries related to falls of 25 ft onto a expanded metal floor and to being caught by the screw conveyor should it be turned on while an employee is walking on it. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this method is to install a suspended or raised walkway between lcoations where employee would have to walk on equipment.
