Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. In that employee(s) were exposed to fall hazards of one hundred and eighty (180) feet while attempting to repel down from a Pyrod telecommunication tower under construction located at Fiest Hardwoods, Newton Falls Ohio. There was no secondary independent lifeline to arrest a fall. Abatement may be attained by but not limited to: a. Prohibit employees from descending towers utilizing repelling methods. b. The use of approved safety climbing devices and fall arrest systems while ascending and descending towers. c. Utilize approved crane baskets with the use of cranes in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.550(g). Or in the alternative: 29 CFR 1926.105: Safety nets were not provided when workplaces were more than 25 feet above the ground or water surface, or other surface(s) where the use of ladders, scaffolds, catch platforms, temporary floors, safety lines, or safety belts were impractical: In that employee(s) were exposed to fall hazards of one hundred and eighty (180) feet while attempting to repel down from a Pyrod telecommunication tower under construction located at Fiest Hardwoods, Newton Falls Ohio. There was no secondary independent lifeline to arrest a fall. Abatement methods may include the use of approved fall arrest systems, safety climbing devices, or the use of approved crane baskets with the use of cranes in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.550(g).
