Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(A)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck/crushed by tow truck equipment: a) On October 16, 1999, for the Peterbilt tow truck used at the tractor trailer rollover site on S.R. 997 (Krome Avenue) and S.R. 25 (Okeechobee Road). The manufacturer's safety ratings, weight limits, capacity ratings, and working limits for the tow truck and its lifting apparatus/equipment (marked on the truck safety warning decals), were exceeded. The fully loaded tractor trailer was too heavy to be uplifted. This resulted in crushing of the trailer, tilting and rollover of the tow truck, and the tow truck operator's fatal injury. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: 1. Stay within the manufacturer's safety ratings, weight limits, capacity ratings, and limits for the tow truck and its lifting apparatus/equipment. CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION OF ABATEMENT IS REQUIREDT
