Title 40.1-51.1.(a) Code of Virginia: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that the piping system containing/transporting 50 percent sodium hydroxide solution was not identified as required under the ANSI A13.1 -1956, Scheme for Identification of Piping Systems. Employee exposure to 50 percent sodium hydroxide solution or related chemical reactions due to the introduction of incompatible chemicals, can cause severe physical injuries or illnesses. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to label the pipe as specified under ANSI A13.1, Scheme for Identification of Piping Systems.cation
