Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by vehicles while walking in city streets: (a)At multiple locations throughout the city of Anchorage letter carriers were observed sorting mail while walking on the right side of city streets with their back side exposed to oncoming vehicles. Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are to: (1) On roads without sidewalks available, instruct letter carriers to walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic as required by current federal and state regulations. (2) Instruct letter carriers to focus attention on vehicle traffic while walking in city streets and only sort or finger mail when the exposure to moving vehicles is not present.
