Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: ELECTRIC
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)P/V Bering Star, Engine area, The 120 VAC portable handlamp (trouble light) was being used to provide illumination during a recent painting operation with the protective bulb cover missing. Employees breaking and/or contacting the incandescent bulb could be exposed to an electrical shock hazard. (b)P/V Bering Star, Employees were not provided with electrical protective equipment such as electrically rated gloves, and insulated mats. Employees working on energized electrical equipment may be exposed to an electrical shock hazard from touching energized equipment. NOTE: Among other methods, feasible and effective abatement methods would include; replacing the metal guard over the incandescent bulb on the portable handlamp, and providing employees with electrical protective gloves and mats.
