Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: STRUCK BY

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a potential hazard of being struck by falling objects. The following conditions contributed to the existence of this hazard: a)Air Mail Facility (AMF): At the A-8 elevated conveyor unit where overloading of the belt has caused bulk mail containers to tumble over the top of the shield guard and into an active/occupied work area below, and where this condition has exposed employees to the hazard of being struck by these materials, the employer failed to ensure that adequate abatement methods were implemented to prevent employees from being exposed to this hazard.
