Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: the hazard of being crushed by portions of the vehicle mounted vertical lift, due to instability of the support structure. Location: Rosehill Shopping Center, beside A&P roof On or about: 3/30/99 a) Two employees used a Skyjack self-propelled elevating work platform (800 series 4WD, model SJ8831A) to obtain access to the A&P roof. The employees climbed over the guardrails of the platform while it was in an elevated position. This condition exposes the employees to the hazard of falling approximately 16 1/2 feet and/or being crushed by the self-propelled elevating work platform. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: 1) As specified in paragraph 7.11.1 of American National Standard Institute, standard A92.6 1990, Self-Propelled Elevating Work Platforms, personnel shall maintain a firm footing on the platform floor while working thereon. 2) Use a ladder (in accordance with 1926.1053-1060) to access the roof. NOTE: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the inspection case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement of this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
