Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to splash hazards and struck-by hazards from falling portions of the hoisted load or the hoist of overhead floor operated electric hoists located on the cadmium line, the rack line, the barrel line, and the small parts line: Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods for abatement are to ensure that the rated load of the hoists are plainly marked on the hoists or load blocks, ensure that latch type hooks are used, ensure that frequent inspection of the hooks are performed to detect deformations, chemical damage, cracks, and excess throat openings, and ensure that frequent inspection of the chains are performed to detect wear, twist, and distortion, in accordance with Section 16-2 of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) B30.16-1973 Safety Standards for Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks, and Slings.
