Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of Public Law 91-596, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falls and serious injury during free fall while riding hoists: (a) During the period on or about February 20, 1997 to March 12, 1997, inclusive, the employer did not prohibit employees from free falling while riding hoists. Employees free fell about fifty feet while riding a hoist at the inspection site. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to develop, implement, communicate, and enforce a work rule prohibiting employees from free falling while riding hoists.
