Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees working around cranes were exposed to the hazard of structural collapse of the boom resulting from exceeding the posted safe working load: a.On or about November 1, 1996, the safe working load limit was not calculated prior to lift, and was then exceeded on the American 9725 barge mounted crane, serial number 8711AC3408. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to not exceed the posted safe working limit of the crane under the conditions of use. According to American National Standard Institute (ANSI) B30.8, Chapter 8-1.2.2, section b, paragraph 2(a), "the manufacturer's original rated capacity shall not be exceeded. The increased possibility of excessive side loading of the boom due to trim and list shall be taken into account." In addition, according to Chapter 8-1.1.3 "a substantial and durable rating chart shall be provided with each crane or derrick and securely fixed at a location easily visible to the operator while seated at his control station."
