Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of explosion when allowed to drill too close to a previously drilled hole filled with explosives: (a)On or about July 23, 1998, at the Lake Crest Circle job site in Hoover, Alabama, the operator of a Caterpillar tracked drilling machine was allowed to drill into a loaded hole. Among other means, one method to correct this hazard is to require a set distance to be maintained between the drilling machine and the nearest charged hole.
