Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to: (A) In the SSD maintenance shop, a Chicago mechanical press brake, SN L6443, is used to bend and form metal while an operator places his hand within 1 inch of the point-of-operation that was not safeguarded. One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: implement an effective "Safe Distance" Safeguarding Program as described in ANSI B11.3 1982, Safety Requirements for Construction, Care, and Use of Power Press Brakes. Elements of the program include: (a) Exposure prevention procedures; (b) Training; (c) Retraining; (d) Supervision; and (e) Periodic inspections.
